The Story of the Magdeburg Hempispheres

In 1654, Otto von Guericke performed an amazing experiment for Emperor Ferdinand III. Before his eyes, it became impossible for two teams of horses to separate what had a few minutes previously been a pair of separate hemispheres, but which now were two parts of an inseparable sphere.
